An old-vine Chilean red with ripe red fruit, an earthy edge and a lovely fresh feel.

País takes the lead here, showing how much interest there is beyond Chile's better-known grapes. It has flavour and structure, but keeps the lightness that makes another glass an appealing prospect.

Masintin works with growers in southern Chile, looking for overlooked vineyards with something worth saying. This wine puts Maule in the spotlight, giving you a red that feels both deeply rooted in its place and very at home on a modern dinner table.

Why we chose it?

We chose it for a fresh look at historic País and the old vineyards helping to broaden the picture of Chilean wine.

Pais
The wine...

Pais

The País grapes that make this wine are planted on East-facing granite slopes in Truquilemu. The vines are old, planted in 1950, producing grapes with plenty of flavour, which are then picked by hand. In the winery these flavours are carefully prioritised, with the whole berries fermented before before maturation in clay amphora and older French oak barrels. It is careful winemaking with plenty of character. Try it with roast chicken, charcuterie or mushrooms for a relaxed meal with friends.

The producer...

Masintin

Masintin grew out of a meeting between four friends travelling through Chile in 2017. Winemaker Diego Urra brings experience in winegrowing, winemaking and permaculture, with a particular interest in pruning and healthy soils. The project works closely with small growers in Maule and Itata, seeking out distinctive vineyards and supporting sustainable farming. Its focus on overlooked sites makes it an especially rewarding producer to follow if you enjoy discovering Chile beyond familiar labels.
Maule Valley
The region...

Maule Valley

Maule sits at the southern end of Chile's Central Valley, with a long history of grape growing. For this wine, the focus is Truquilemu in the coastal hills, where old vineyards are still farmed without irrigation. Granite slopes and established bush vines form an important part of the picture. Exploring these sites gives a different view of Chile, one shaped by individual growers and historic plantings rather than the country's most familiar exports.
