A generous, creamy white that makes a strong case for giving Paarl more attention.

Cyclus brings five grapes together, with pear, apple and apricot flavours balanced by a fresh finish. There is plenty of texture here, making it a natural choice when dinner calls for a white with some substance.

Avondale grows its grapes organically and takes a patient approach in the cellar. The blend is layered and full of flavour, with enough interest to enjoy over a leisurely meal. Put it beside something delicious and let the evening take its time.

Why we chose it?

We chose it for an inventive white blend that shows how much there is to explore in South Africa.

The wine...

Cyclus

A mixture of oak barrels and clay vessels gives Cyclus its distinctive shape. The grapes ferment naturally, with part of the blend fermented as whole bunches in amphora and qvevri, traditional clay winemaking vessels. Time on the lees, the yeast left after fermentation, adds further texture. It is a satisfying white to pour with crab or lobster, or pork in a creamy sauce. Deserves a proper dinner this one.

The family-run estate combines certified organic farming with biodynamic practices, aiming to keep its vineyards part of a healthy wider ecosystem. Certification also covers the cellar, whilst conservation work includes bringing indigenous plants back into the landscape. It is a useful reminder that natural-minded wine can involve considerable care and precision, from grape growing to the choices made during maturation.

Paarl

Paarl lies north of Stellenbosch in South Africa's Western Cape, surrounded by mountains and linked by the Berg River. Its warm Mediterranean climate supports a wide range of grapes, while slopes, elevations and cooling influences create different conditions across the district. Granite, shale and sandstone are all part of its varied soils. These differences give growers plenty to work with, and help explain why Paarl deserves exploration well beyond one familiar style.
