Roter Veltiner is one of those hidden gems that doesn’t always get the love it deserves. Even in its home turf of Wagram, it makes up just 5% of grape plantings, because its historically been challenging to grow. But with modern wine techniques and increasing local esteem, it's starting to enjoy a reputation to match its quality.

What we really love about it is the rich texture it brings and the layers of complex flavours. Emil Bauer, a small family-run winery, is all about quality over quantity. By keeping their yields low, they bring out bolder, more vibrant flavours – think ripe peach, grapefruit, and a dash of white pepper. Favours that stick around long after you’ve had a sip. Proper good stuff.

Why we chose it?

Roter Veltliner is absolutely a hidden gem we think is worth knowing about.

Roter

Don't be fooled by the name - Roter (Red) Veltliner - which derives from reddish tinge found on the grapes. But this is definitely a white grape, perfect for fresh yet complex white wines with a rich texture. A super versatile wine, it can be enjoyed on its own, or paired with light summary dishes.

Wagram

Wagram is located just outside of Vienna on the banks of the Danube, and close to the well regarded region of Wachau. Given its own 'DAC' status in 2021, Wagram benefits from warm days and cool nights, which allows grapes to slowly develop intense flavours.
